Reservation and Education System of India

The headlines today are huddeled with Reservation being introduced into the IIMs and IITs (the premier institutes for giving higher education and management) for Backward and Other Backward Classes (BC and OBC) excluding their creamy layer. There has been mostly anti-reservation campaigns and little pro-reservation campaigns too.But the state has the stick in its hands , it can do what it wants.

Rather than going into same debate whether reservations should be or should not be. I want to know :

Will reservations help in socio-economic upliftment of targeted masses?

Reservation is a just a shock therapy to prevent the damage done by our grass root Public education system. There is no sight of any improvement in Public education system.

I won’t go into statistical details, But what i have experienced

I am product of an Village Government School in State of Punjab(One of the affluent states of India). The school where i studied was called the best school in the locality, But the study culture there was like, we were made to learn from the help books rather than reading texts. English was started in 6th grade by Social Sciences teacher because there was no English teacher and After 8th grade there was no arrangement for English language teaching. There were no extra-curricular activities, no games. It was the time when the school was called in its prime time.

After that the school has gone to worst conditions , the only way the kids clear is by Mass cheating in the exams. The alternative to the government schools are private schools which employ teachers on salaries of 1000 to 1500 and who are product of those government schools. They are called English medium schools , but there is hardly any healthy learning environment.

The economically weaker parents put there kids into Government schools and economically stronger put them into those private schools out come from both schools are almost the same. This is the story of nearly 70% of Punjab and one can imagine the status of other states.

Those to who study in good city schools , are taught good English, are given good environment, are made to take part extra curricular activities. They face the pressure of doing good in the exams in terms of scores . The focus is on getting scores by hook or crook rather than learning. there is no healthy competition ,There is lethal competition. We don’t study what we love. We study what we are made to study. I want to know :

Are there any measures taken to improve the quality of education?

Revolutionary changes needs to be done in Education system, But i don’t think there is any step being taken in this direction because this will have long term benefits.

Improvement in Education system would not fetch votes, But Reservations will fetch them quick votes .

We are amused by the way India is progressing , we are amused the way Dhoni’s are fetching crores. We are amused be the way India’s riches  has made into the Forbes list.

We don’t care how the other half lives, and  Then we are worried about the biggest Internal threat to security are Naxalites. We are amused why they are so evil, we are amused why they can’t be like us.

  1. Hi Jasdeep,

I don’t think you visit my political blog. If you had, you could have seen articles/comments where I have defended reservations. Reservations work very well in curing the ills of social discrimination. We can’t cure 4000+ years of discrimination in one night. We need patience. There might be issues in the way reservation system is implemented (like corruption) but they are the issues affecting everything in India. Scientific research clearly points towards an affirmative action like reservation system. In facvt, Tamilnadu is the best example to prove the worthiness of reservations. It has the maximum reservations in the country. It is also one state where you can find people from brahmins to bcs to obcs to even dalits benefiting from the current economic boom. There are many in Tamilnadu who haven’t benefited fully yet but if you compare to the number of people from BC, OBC and SC/ST categories in colleges and even in institutions of higher learning, you will see the success of reservations, even if it is not complete. As long as we don’t have the number of people in institutions of higher learning commensurate with their % in the society, we need reservations. Whenever you have some time, dig into jagadguru.in for my posts on reservations.

    • We should not allow such reservation on cast basis. Any amount of financial help for poor but meritoreous students s fine. Those who believe so, shall meet Primeminister at Lal Quila on 15 Aug. Let us send this to all in our email address book, for vast publicity for this noble cause.

  2. And also, economically weaker sections don’t need reservations. We need it only for socially discriminated sections. There are scientific basis to show this too.

  3. @Krish

What i have experienced, The state has been dysfunctional in providing equal opportunities to socially discriminated/economically weaker sections.
Will reservations do them any good in long term ?
Reservations is little state can provide, what needs to be done is long term grass root solution and that is empowerment by education.

  4. I agree about the grass roots solution. There is no doubt about it. But reservations is one of the many tools in the tool kit to fight the effects of erstwhile social discrimination. We cannot just offer them education and tell them they have to compete with people from privileged sections. Offering education is one part of the solution. Reservation Systems is also another small part. We need a collective system, with grassroots mobilization, to solve the problem. My response was purely targeted about your doubts on the ability of the reservations system. My argument was to point out that it is very much needed along with other efforts. Reservations play a very very important role in the whole process along with other contributions. Some day, when I have more time in my hands, I will send you the post/comment from my blog where I have showed the need for reservations starting with the basic knowledge from genetics, all human beings are created equal and there is no difference based on race, religion or caste.

    interesting,

socially discriminated! that too while entering higher education !!! well i thot ppl were sensible enough there
and its not enuf to give socially discriminated good education , i now think you are insulting the very ppl you are trying to represent. I am a strong believer in the abilities of human beings as a whole. I believe anyone who has the right inputs can make it to any place he/she wants. I see no logic in why you believe that socially discriminated cannot make it on their own.

will definitely try findin time to luk into ur blog and understnd ur weird belief

    cheers though bro !

  7. THE STORY OF RESERVATION
THE RECENT HYPE BY MEDIA, ORGANIZATIONS LIKE YFE IS MISGUIDING THE YOUTH AND ARE MADE TO BELIEVE THAT CASTE BASED RESERVATION IS GREATEST THREAT TO THEM.

They are’nt made aware of actual reality about various quotas.
Instead of the thing is BASIC PRICIPLE OF RESERVATION is objectionable. Youth seems to have believed that only CASTE BASED RESERVATION is objectionable. They are’nt made aware of various aspects of reservation and even different forms of reservation. Even if they are aware, they are blinded by some people and media to make them realize that they are upper castes which are’nt benefitted by reservations instead reservation is only against them.
They are presented misfacts about reservation especially SC/ST reservation packaged in the form of stories like grass hopper and ants.
Actually this way, castiest minds of the society are convincing the youth to follow their own caste lines and integrate them. While most youth anti reservationists raise their voices out of pure jealousy based on caste lines. While the modern youth still boasts about his higher caste pride, they can’t take reservation for lower castes. May be because always their caste has been a matter a pride for them and now they are loosing something because of the same.

  8. Fact says:

    Hi,

Note: First we should agree the fact that all the human mind is capable of growing and any body can attain to higher level.

Being that is the case you are accepting that you cannot compete with the so called Forward class. By doing this you are doing this you are not justifying why is this so.

Also note we are not against reservations but when the basic education is given (only until then the parents teach) why do you require reservation for the upper education. By doing this you are just increasing the numbers and not actually growing the knowledge which is required for the person who is not capable of taking up the course.

Secondly you are also risking the human life (what will happen to a patient by the doctor who had just completed his degree because of reservation, and what will happen to the building constructucted by a engineer who has completed the degree because of reservation, but actually they are not even eligible to study the course).

More over because of this the so called forward communities are going to study their books to get the mark of 97% and 98% where as the so called SC, ST, OBC will target his study only to attain 50% or 60%. By doing this they are being downgraded in the society automatically.

Now the world is targetting only the working crowd, sooner it will ask for the best candidates then obviously the reservation group will take a lower priority with them.

Also because of the effect of reservations in the government organization it is going to decrease the performance dramatically bcoz they are not up to the mark. (Already the government organizations are slow).

Now the talk of reservation on private sector is going on which will make all the foreign companies to migrate from India to China or Philippines and finally India ends up with nothing in hand and not even will be able to feed them.
